Why insights are a motivator for action

And the power of making what’s important to you visible.

I came across a powerful insight earlier in the week. And it happened whilst I was walking along the beach. Trying to hit my daily goal of 5,000 steps.

My favourite setting for a walk is along my local beach. I was confident that one loop of this path would give me the 5,000 steps I was aiming for. I opened an app on my phone before I started. More as a way of validating my estimate.

As I came to the end of the loop, I checked my app and saw that I was only halfway to my goal of 5,000 steps.

I checked the time. I had been walking for 20 minutes. It felt longer than that. My assumption was that the walk takes about 35 minutes.

There was my insight – if I doubled my walking time, I could reach my goal of 5,000 steps AND I could do it now. Walking along the beach. Which was important to me. That’s what made it powerful.
